Thelma Merner grew up in Lakewood, Ohio, and attended Lakewood High School as an honor student. She was a member of Phi Lambda Sigma. She also held a position as a Conservatory Assistant, was Vice President of Mu Phi Epsilon, and participated in Glee Club.
